Lanterns For Lumora

Create an artwork individually or collaboratively that is a lantern with light.

The lantern is a symbol and an object, as is light.

Lumora Theatre is offering their lobby space for a uniquely Tacoma art experience. The goal is to exhibit at least 10 different lanterns to be installed in the lobby space. Each lantern expressing who we are as an art community.

Group Show opening event is October, 9th, 2026.

The Concept

Light. Community. Who we are.

Lumora’s lobby is going dark, on purpose. This fall, we’re turning it over to Tacoma artists for a group show built entirely from light. One lantern, one fixture, one glowing gesture at a time: light/sculptural/mixed-media work that answers a single question: what does it mean to make things, together, in this city, right now.

The Work

Three ways to hang your light

Every piece needs a home in the lobby. Pick the mounting format that fits your work. We’ll confirm placement with you before drop-off.

Freestanding

Stands on its own base on the lobby floor. Bring a stable footprint. The lobby stays a walkway during shows.

No mounting hardware needed

Wall-mounted

Hangs flat or projects from a lobby wall. We’ll provide the fastening point and confirm max projection depth.

Hardware confirmed with Lumora crew

Ceiling-suspended

Drops from a ceiling hook & magnet point. Hangs must be test-fit on-site before install day to confirm your rigging works.

On-site test required

Specs & Safety

Read this before you build

The lobby is a shared, working space, and it needs to stay safe and walkable during every show. Here’s what to design around.

Footprint
Sized for the lobby: keep it reasonable for a shared, walkable space. Exact clearances are in the full artist brief.
Weight limit
No piece (with hardware) may exceed 50 lbs, on any format.
Electrical
Standard venue safety & electrical code applies: LED / low-heat sources only, no open flame, cords secured out of walkways.
Ceiling rigging
Hook + magnet mounts must be tested on-site with Lumora crew ahead of install. Don’t build the hang blind.
